Wooden nostalgia

ASOS dress (similar), JIL SANDER NAVY bag, WAREHOUSE sunglasses (here)* and SWEDISH HASBEENS sandals (similar or here )*

Back when I was a kid, every summer we went to Danmark I got a new pair of clogs. They started out as plain black or red- like my grandmother always had- and then when I became a little older (and admittedly, just a bit weird) I started going for pink patent leather ones, sometimes they even had little strawberries on. I think one year they had green and red butterflies on, but it's entirely plausible i've mentally blocked that out. Getting those clogs in July signified the start of summer- a kind of tradition I fully intend on forcing on my children until they're old enough to realize that pink patent clogs are more Elle Woods on drugs than socially acceptable- but ignorance is bliss, and I'm going to tell them they look damn fabulous. Even if they're boys.

I digress, the point I'm trying to make is that clogs have always had a strong sense of nostalgia in my mind, as I'm sure they do in the majority of Scandinavians. Back when Chanel hit them up in 2010, I was too plagued by a confusing mix of fond memories and sartorial shame to really appreciate what was going on. Plus a small part of me wondered if Karl Lagerfield and all the following interpretations were playing some kind of sartorial practical joke, such is the paranoia of a fourteen year old. Despite that, when I popped down to the Swedish Hasbeens pop-up shop in Shoreditch a few weeks ago, I was reminded of how far the shoe that I'd scorned as gardening gear for most of my adolescence has come, and found myself overwhelmingly grateful for a company who had managed to mix the perfect amount of nostalgia with the perfect amount of sartorial awareness; there is a certain charm to revisiting trends you 100% endorsed at the age of five, it's even more charming when you can endorse them again without looking like the aforementioned five year old you once were.
Let's call this Camilla vs Clogs, take 2.

  14. I got my first pair of clogs at my 12th birthday as a gift from my parents-of course mum chose them since they were pink! I still remember the sound they made while I was walking down the cobbled streets.
