On the edge

#teenvogue // M&S coat, ADIDAS trainers (c/o Bank), J BRAND jeans, LOVE dress (c/o), ZARA bag

I often find myself wondering to what extent we are influenced by trends. I mentioned briefly here that I wasn’t entirely convinced I would have picked up the pink M&S coat had it not been splashed here, there and everywhere on just about every social media news feed I find myself checking (uh, compulsively) on a daily basis. When I first saw the Balenciaga cut out combat boots, I was unimpressed. Now, after almost 2 years of them being the ‘it’ boot, I actually found myself Googling their price the other day and maybe, just maybe, hovering around the ‘add to basket’ button (before laughing and crying into my wallet). Why, though, do we change our minds and feel the need to participate in trends? For this argument, let’s say that by ‘trend’ I mean item, not a ‘look’.

I suppose the first assumption could be that we simply like the pair of boots, the dress or skirt that *happens* to be in at the moment. It’s a happenstance collision of popularity and personal taste. Although perhaps it’s more a subconscious desire for others to think we have good taste, after all, why would millions of people buy a jacket if it weren’t aesthetically pleasing to them? Then again, we all idolise these items in different ways. One person sees the item styled in a different stratosphere to the next, so perhaps we hold the item to different aesthetic values. I like to think that people buy these designer ‘it’ pieces for all the right reasons, but surely this can’t be the case every time? After all in a world that judges every book by its cover, at least initially, there must be some underlying desire to conform?

Or perhaps if we are exposed enough to something, you learn to love it.  I don’t think anyone would be averse to the suggestion that, in some cases, overexposure to something you initially don’t find attractive can change your mind. On top of the industry constantly shoving images and cut-outs and articles on the same trend down our throats (I don’t mean this negatively), they accompany these with their opinion. Might Vogue or Bazaar telling me that I simply must have this coat have an impact on whether or not I buy it? Bloggers, celebrities, fashion houses oversaturating our line of sight with one item and endless appraisal; who wouldn’t be influenced by that?

  10. I rarely have a huge urge for a particular item anymore. There are particular pieces of high fashion that I find myself staring at with such longing I might burst, but when it comes down to it, it is more in an appreciation of it as a beautiful piece of craftsmanship rather than as something I need in my wardrobe. I guess as a busty, and stocky girl with limited budget I've accepted I will not ever be Jasmin Sewell so I find myself much happier with being inspired by things. I trawl ebay and charity shops, as well as raiding my own wardrobe to curate looks and attitudes I want to emulate rather than stressing over not owning *those* boots. Its a hard one to walk between trends and style but I think acknowledging the limits of your own life are steps towards that? I will however finish with the thought that those trainers are badass.

  29. I was SO over the pink coat trend as soon as it started popping up. Surely a PINK COAT is the dumbest idea ever? But I've got to say, I actually kind of love it now. Maybe for the impracticality and maybe because (as you point out) I've just seen it so much. But, I can't help but wonder... will anyone be wearing these pink coats next season? Surely they are the epitome of 'it' items and no one wants to be seen in last season's 'it'. Right?

Regardless, I love this look on you and if you lived nearby I'd steal it from your wardrobe. xx

  30. I spotted that bag in Zara the other day and I wanted to get it. It looks very spacious. I like the shape but I don't know if it is too bulky to carry around everyday. What do you think?

  32. i hear ya! i often find that i cant decide whether i would genuinely like an item had i just seen it on my own, in a store but i do find that i am often lusting after items that i have seen on many a blogger. the zara white skort is one item i can say fo' sho is one item definitely influenced by bloggers and you're one to blame for this too looking all hot and cutesy in it, it was always out of stock tho and i am convinced it wouldnt have looked nearly asgood. another item are the valentino rock stud, xx

  33. Great post, I often find myself wondering this. I think personal taste derfinitely comes in to it, but I doubt anyone (esp. fashion bloggers/people who love reading fashion blogs) can help being massively influences by blogs, magazines, advertising and the media in general, it's just everywhere. I have found myself 'coming around' to certain trends, for example camouflage, beanies, jelly shoes etc etc, others I never really got, such as clogs. In my opinion, the more you see something the more 'normal' and on-trend it becomes. Especially when brands will gift big bloggers/celebs with certain things, they will then style them in a more appealing way, with lovely lighting and cute poses. You sort of can't help but like them!

  35. This entire outfit is just amazing! I love that the colorful jackets are in for this fall/winter because it will be nice to see those pops of color during the gloomy winter days! I also like that you are using sneakers within fashion because I know it's really started to trend and being an athletic person who has to walk a lot in Chicago it's nice to see I can wear my sneakers even more! You have such great fashion inspiration I cannot keep off of your blog! There is another blog I frequently visit http://telavivcouture.blogspot.com/ she is amazing and so chic with her outfits! It would be really great if you could check it out!!
