SS'11 favorites so far. (part 1)... (Excl. Resort collections) Basics, prepare your self for a mother of a post. Read all the words at your own peril. Actually, it took me a couple days to write and reviwe about the collections, so you better read this.

I loved the wearability of all the Spring/ Summer collections, it seems that was a goal for all designers, even the Rodarte girls. This isn't all the collections that I will be posting about, I've still got to get through a whole section on minimalism and a few resort collections.
(Proenza Schouler)

Derek Lam

Jeremy Laing

Victoria Beckham

Normally, I dread Summer. Not Spring, Summer. Spring is easy, light layering, pretty patterns, not too hot, not cold. Spring is perfect. The high street shops still have the seasons collections semi-fresh in their mind, the clothes are nice, the weather is nice, it's all nice nice nice. Summer, summer is hot, sticky, shops lose their grasp, the world falls apart. We have to live off the few dresses we own, suddenly getting dressed is an effort. If it's too hot, you can't layer, accessorizing is only for evenings. You have to wear a dress and sandals. Shopping becomes a stressful experience, trying to find items that are special enough that they don't need to be complimented by a jumper, or boots or a big fat chunky necklace. They also need to be casual enough for everyday use. By mid July, your craving late September when it cools to the beauty of Autumn, and people become stylish again because dressing is fun again. But this Summer will be different, this is made clear by the designers. Proenza's designs are interesting enough, they need no accessories except some sunnies and flat sandals. They can be worn from Day to Night easily, beautifully, with only a touch of lipstick required. Peter Som may be relatively new on the scene, but he's there, he's on it. The prints are tropic, the shoes are high, but casual, the black transforms the clothes from cheesy to chic and elegant. The only good thing about summer, The Little White Dress remains, standing tall and reformed. There's even a cardigan for the summer days where it seems like Autumn. Despite the fact the Karen Millen used some pointy shoes, all is forgiven because of the colors, the prints and the subtle use of bows. She carries on the retro feel from A/W, but this time it's looser, it's edgier, it's ready for 30 degrees Celsius. Derek Lam screams 'IT'S 40 DEGREES AND I'M WEARING TROUSERS', because if you match them with a white shirt, It's okay. It's a 70s flashback, with a Mediterranean twist, something new and fresh, ready for Spring, Summer and even Autumn, it will carry us through summer so well we won't even notice it. Jeremy Laing and Victoria Beckham have your summer cocktail parties covered, light fabric, cuts that let your skin breathe, and colors that make you do a double take. Laing even allows accessories so light, it's like they're not there, but they are. And these aren't even all the best collections, there's more. All I can say is, Topshop, take notes.
